What’s wrong with an automated car wash?
Ahh, the dreaded automatic car wash…the detailer's enemy! I’m kidding, only somewhat.
There’s really nothing wrong with them. Depending on your goals with your vehicle, an automatic car wash can be absolutely fine. BUT, you should know some of the risks associated with them. Automatic car washes are a quick, express, in and out type of service. These places are built to process many, many vehicles throughout the day. Just from a sheer volume perspective, it is not possible for an automatic car wash establishment to put the time, effort and care into cleaning your vehicle, and they simply aren't designed for it. Spots will be missed. Streaks will be left. And thoroughness will be absent. Additionally, those very large turnstile brushes and flaps can cause some serious imperfections to your vehicle. As you drive off, you will come away with the impression that your car is clean, and it is certainly much cleaner than before you entered the auto wash, but it comes at a cost. Upon close inspection, you may notice several scratches and swirl marks, marring, and even micro damage to the car. Moreover, the auto washes tend to use harsh and cheap chemicals to clean. These, while effective at dirt removal, can degrade the integrity of your paint and clear coat over time.
I want to be clear, there is nothing wrong with an automated car wash. There is a time and place for them in many respects. I understand many people have lots on their plate, a family, and other more important things to tend to in life. It’’s easy to zip in and out of an automated car wash. Your car won't completely fall apart or be in shambles, but after continuous repeated exposure there may be some adverse effects… You’ve been warned.
